How to Create your Alternative Wedding Cake

Your alternative wedding cake, now you may be asking yourself what does she mean by this? Well for me, when I think about alternative wedding cakes, I think about anything that you wouldn’t necessarily class as a traditional wedding cake, so it could be colour, shape, size, different textured, the list does go on

I know when we got married 27 years ago we had a very traditional three tier square fruit cake, it was covered in royal icing, it had pillars for height and then handmade roses in the centre of each tier nowadays the choice is endless and I am a firm believer that it is your day and the cake you have, should reflect you as a couple and represent your individuality

Lets Create your Alternative Wedding Cake – Let’s Talk Colour

When you think of a wedding cake you would normally associate it being a white cake however if doesn’t have to be, recently I was involved in a photo shoot where although the theme was black its still needed to incorporate a glamorous feel I wanted to take a traditional style wedding cake which for me was a four tier cake, adorned with hand made roses along with a monogram but give it a modern twist

Which one do you prefer?

Different Shapes and Sizes

Again there is no right or wrong shape of cake, yes traditionally, wedding cakes are either round or square, but it doesn’t have to be, by pairing a hexagon base tier topped with a variety of different height will really create a statement piece for your wedding

One trend I have noticed, which isn’t going away, is taller tiers, normally a cake tier would be 4” in height, the trends are for tiers to be a minimum of 6” in height and really create that showcase piece for you and your guests

It’s All in The Details

When considering the design and details of your cake the possibilities are endless, you could opt for sharp edges, textured tiers, tiers covered in ruffles, if you are looking for a bespoke design book I would highly recommend booking a consultation where we can discuss your requirements in more details

Cake Not Your Thing?

Now as a cake designer I shouldn’t really say this but if you don’t like cake, don’t order one (there I said it!) again it is your day, have whatever you want, if you are a savoury person, a cheese wheels or pork pies cakes are a firm favourite, I was doing some research for this blog and come across a company called The Cheese Shed, below is one of the cheese wheels they offer, I’ll pop a link at the end to check them out.

Sweet Treats Anyone?

Again another option for your guests to enjoy could be a donut wall or donut tower, these are so popular and your guest can simply help themselves to a yummy treat

Cupcakes towers are still a popular choice, I started my cake journey making cupcakes so they will always hold a special place in my heart, they can incorporate any theme, can be supplied in a variety of different flavours and again are perfect for your guests to enjoy with a glass of bubbly
